Real Ramsey project
— Vinyl Plank

The most popular floor we install, and it's not close

If you’d told a flooring guy fifteen years ago that vinyl would be the go-to floor for nice houses, he’d have laughed. But luxury vinyl plank has come a long way from the sheet vinyl in your grandma’s kitchen. Today’s LVP looks like real wood or stone, it’s completely waterproof, it’s tough enough for a mudroom, and it’s soft enough to be comfortable in a bedroom.

That’s why it’s the floor we install more than any other at Ramsey Contracting. It solves problems. Spilled juice, wet dog, dropped pan, sliding chair, none of it matters. And it can run through the whole house, kitchen and bathrooms included, without changing materials at every doorway.

LVP vs. LVT vs. sheet vinyl

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)

comes in long planks that look like wood. It’s what most people mean when they say vinyl flooring now.

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT)

is the same product in square or rectangular tiles that look like stone or ceramic. Some can even be grouted.

Sheet vinyl

is the old-school roll product. We can install it, and it has its place in some rentals and utility rooms, but for most homes LVP is the better answer.

What to look for when choosing LVP

Not all vinyl is equal, and the cheap stuff at the big box store is cheap for a reason. Here’s what actually matters.

Wear layer.

This is the clear top coat that protects the print layer. It’s measured in mils. 12 mil is fine for a bedroom. 20 mil or more is what you want for kitchens, entryways, and homes with pets. This is the single biggest thing that separates a floor that lasts from one that doesn’t.

Core.

SPC (stone plastic composite) cores are rigid and dent-resistant, great over slightly imperfect subfloors. WPC (wood plastic composite) cores are a bit softer and warmer underfoot. Both are waterproof.

Attached pad.

Many planks come with a pad already attached, which adds comfort and quiets the floor. Some products need a separate underlayment. We’ll match the right one to your room.

Look.

Wide planks, long lengths, and low-gloss finishes look the most like real wood. We’ll bring samples so you can compare them in your own house.

— How we do it

How we install vinyl plank

1

Tear-out.

Old flooring comes out and gets hauled off. In some cases LVP can go over an existing hard floor, and we’ll tell you honestly whether that’s a good idea for your situation.

2

Subfloor prep.

This is the step that matters most with vinyl. LVP is thin, and every bump, seam, and dip in the subfloor will telegraph through it. We level low spots, sand or grind high spots, fill gaps, and screw down anything loose. Concrete gets checked for moisture and flatness.

3

Underlayment.

If the product doesn’t have an attached pad, we install the right underlayment for sound and comfort.

4

Layout.

We plan the direction of the planks and stagger the joints so seams don’t line up and the floor looks natural.

5

Installation.

Click-lock planks locked tight with the proper expansion gap at the walls so the floor can move with temperature changes. Glue-down products installed with the right adhesive.

6

Trim and transitions.

New quarter round or baseboards, plus clean transitions at doorways and stairs.

7

Cleanup.

Ready to walk on the same day.

Before · During · After

Inspected three times

We walk every vinyl floor before, during, and after. The crew leader and project manager both check for gaps, lippage, hollow spots, and loose transitions, and both sign off before we bring you in. Most crews install and leave. We inspect.

Honest about what vinyl can and can't do

LVP is fantastic, but we’ll tell you the truth about it. It can dent under very heavy furniture if the core is soft. Cheap wear layers scratch. It won’t add resale value the way real hardwood does. And if it’s installed over a bad subfloor, no product in the world will hide that.

If we think another floor would serve you better in a particular room, we’ll say so. We’re here to solve your problem, not just sell what’s on the truck.

Straight estimates

Our written estimate separates product, prep, and labor so you can see exactly what you’re paying for. We flag subfloor risks up front, before the old floor comes out, so nothing changes later. We’re rarely the cheapest bid, rarely the highest, and always the most direct.
