Real Ramsey project
— Tile & Shower Walls

The best-looking part of the bathroom, and the riskiest

A tile shower is the centerpiece of a bathroom. It’s also the one place in the house where water is hitting a wall on purpose every single day. If the waterproofing behind that tile isn’t done right, you won’t know for a year or two. Then you’ll notice a soft spot on the floor, a stain on the ceiling below, or a smell you can’t place. By then, the damage is behind the wall and the whole thing has to come out.

Ramsey Contracting builds tile showers and tile walls the careful way. The part you see gets the attention it deserves, and the part you don’t see gets even more.

What we build

Custom tile showers.

Walk-in showers with tiled walls and floors, built-in niches, benches, curbs or curbless entries, and glass enclosures.

Tub surrounds.

Tile from the tub deck to the ceiling, replacing dated fiberglass or old cracked tile.

Tub-to-shower conversions.

Take out the tub and build a full tile shower in its place. See Bathroom Remodels →

Kitchen backsplashes.

Subway, herringbone, mosaic, stacked, or large-format slabs. Installed straight with clean grout lines. See Kitchen Remodels →

Accent and feature walls.

Tile behind a vanity, a fireplace surround, a laundry room wall, or a full-height entry wall.

Shower floors and pans.

Mosaic tile floors, linear drains, and properly sloped pans.

— How we do it

What goes behind the tile

This is the part of the page we’d ask you to read even if you skip the rest.

1

Demo and inspection.

We take the old surround down to the studs and check the framing for rot, mold, and water damage. Around old tubs and showers there almost always is some. We replace it.

2

Framing.

Studs get shimmed or sistered so the walls are plumb and flat. Tile on a crooked wall looks crooked, no matter how good the tile setter is. This is also when we frame niches and benches.

3

Backer board.

Cement board or foam board, screwed to the studs. Never drywall in a wet area, and never green board either, no matter what the last contractor said.

4

Waterproofing.

A liquid or sheet membrane over the whole wet area, with corners, seams, niches, and the pan all sealed as one continuous system. This is the step that gets skipped or half-done more than any other, and it’s the reason showers fail.

5

Shower pan.

Pre-sloped pan or a hand-built mud pan, sloped to the drain and waterproofed. We flood-test it before tile goes on.

6

Tile.

Layout planned so cuts are balanced and grout lines run true. Full thinset coverage, leveling clips on large tile, and proper spacing.

7

Grout and seal.

Grout packed and cleaned, corners and changes of plane caulked with matching silicone (not grout, which cracks), and sealed where needed.

8

Glass and fixtures.

Shower doors, panels, and hardware installed after the tile has cured.

3×
Before · During · After

Inspected three times

Every shower and tile wall gets walked before, during, and after. The crew leader and project manager inspect the waterproofing before it’s covered, and they inspect the finished tile before you see it. Nobody signs off until both are satisfied. Most crews cover up their work and move on. We look at ours.

Tile choices

Porcelain is our go-to for showers because it absorbs almost no water. Ceramic works well for backsplashes and accent walls. Natural stone is beautiful but needs sealing and upkeep, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a good fit for your household.

On style, large-format tile means fewer grout lines and easier cleaning. Subway and classic shapes never go out of style. Mosaics work great on shower floors for grip and on niches for a little contrast. We bring samples so you can see them in your bathroom light.

Straight pricing

A tile shower is labor-heavy. It takes longer than most people expect, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Your written estimate separates demo, framing and waterproofing, tile, and finish so you can see where the money goes and compare bids on what’s actually being done. If a cheaper bid doesn’t mention a waterproofing membrane, ask why.
