Real Ramsey project
— Laminate

Laminate gets a bad rap it doesn't deserve

A lot of people hear “laminate” and picture the shiny, fake-looking stuff from the 90s that swelled up the first time somebody mopped it. That’s not what we install. Modern laminate has realistic textures, matte finishes, beveled edges, and a surface layer that’s harder than most hardwood. Some of the newer lines are even water-resistant enough for kitchens.

At Ramsey Contracting, we install a lot of laminate in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, offices, and rental properties. It’s a smart floor for people who want the look of wood, need it to hold up to daily life, and would rather put the savings toward new paint or a bathroom update.

Room with laminate wood flooring

Laminate vs. vinyl plank: which one?

This is the question we get most, so here’s the honest breakdown.

For bedrooms, living areas, and hallways, laminate is often the better value. For wet rooms, go vinyl. Plenty of our customers use both: laminate through the living spaces and vinyl in the kitchen and baths. We’ll help you figure out what makes sense for your house. See Vinyl Plank →

Laminate

has a high-density fiberboard core with a printed wood image and a hard, clear wear layer on top. It’s more scratch-resistant than vinyl and feels more like real wood underfoot. Its weakness is water. Standard laminate will swell if water sits on it, so it’s best in dry rooms. Water-resistant lines have closed that gap a good bit.

Luxury vinyl plank

is fully waterproof and a little softer underfoot. It’s the better choice for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. It’s a bit more prone to scratching from heavy furniture or big dogs.

What to look for in laminate

AC rating.

This is the durability scale. AC3 is fine for normal residential use. AC4 is what we recommend for busy households, pets, and rentals. AC5 is commercial-grade.

Thickness.

8mm is the minimum we’d suggest. 10mm to 12mm feels more solid, quiets the floor, and hides small subfloor imperfections better.

Attached underlayment.

Some laminate comes with a pad already attached. If not, we’ll install the right one for sound and moisture protection.

Water resistance.

If you’re putting laminate anywhere near a sink or exterior door, ask about water-resistant lines. We’ll be honest about which ones live up to the claim.

Look.

Wide planks, embossed textures, and low-gloss finishes look most like hardwood. We’ll bring samples so you can see them next to your walls and trim.

— How we do it

How we install laminate

1

Tear-out.

We remove the old flooring and dispose of it.

2

Subfloor prep.

Laminate floats over the subfloor, so it needs a flat surface. We level dips, knock down high spots, screw down squeaks, and fix any soft areas. On concrete, we install a vapor barrier so moisture from below doesn’t reach the core.

3

Acclimation.

Laminate needs a couple of days in your house to adjust to the humidity before it goes down. We build that into the schedule.

4

Underlayment.

The right pad for your subfloor and room.

5

Layout.

Planks run in the direction that makes the room look longest, with staggered joints so the pattern looks natural.

6

Installation.

Click-lock planks fit tight with a proper expansion gap around the edges. That gap is what keeps the floor from buckling when the seasons change, and it’s what a lot of crews get wrong.

7

Trim and transitions.

Quarter round or baseboards to cover the expansion gap, plus transitions at doorways and stairs.

8

Cleanup.

Vacuumed and ready for furniture the same day.

Three walkthroughs

We walk every laminate job before, during, and after. The crew leader and project manager both inspect for gaps, peaking, hollow spots, and loose trim before signing off. Then we walk it with you. A lot of installers never go back over their own work. We consider that part of the job.

Real pricing, up front

Laminate is one of the most affordable floors we install, and we’re straightforward about the cost. Your written estimate separates product, prep, and labor. If the subfloor has issues we can see ahead of time, they’re in the estimate. If there’s a risk we’ll find something once the old floor is up, we tell you what that would add before we start. No surprise line items.

Financing available

Even a good deal is easier to say yes to when it’s spread out. Ask about financing when you call.
