Real Ramsey project
— Tile

Tile is still the answer for wet rooms

Vinyl plank has taken over a lot of the house, and we install plenty of it. But in a bathroom, a laundry room, a mudroom, or a busy kitchen, tile is still the floor that wins. It doesn’t care about water. It doesn’t scratch. It doesn’t fade. Done right, a tile floor will outlast everything else in the room, including the cabinets.

The catch is “done right.” Tile is the least forgiving floor there is. If the subfloor flexes, the grout cracks. If the surface isn’t flat, you get lippage, those raised edges you catch your toe on. If the thinset isn’t spread properly, tiles sound hollow and eventually break loose. Ramsey Contracting installs tile the slow, careful way, because the fast way doesn’t hold up.

Bathroom with new porcelain tile floor

Porcelain vs. ceramic

For floors, we usually steer people toward porcelain. It costs a bit more up front and saves you from replacing chipped tile down the road.

Porcelain

is denser, harder, and absorbs almost no water. It’s the right choice for floors, especially in high-traffic and wet areas. Most wood-look and stone-look tiles are porcelain.

Ceramic

is a little softer and easier to cut, and it costs less. It’s fine for lower-traffic floors and great for walls and backsplashes.

Popular tile floor looks right now

We bring samples so you can see the color and texture in your own space.

Wood-look plank tile.

All the warmth of hardwood, none of the water worries. Big in kitchens and open floor plans.

Large-format tile.

12×24 and bigger. Fewer grout lines, cleaner look. Needs a very flat subfloor, which is exactly the kind of prep we do.

Stone-look porcelain.

Marble and travertine looks without the sealing and upkeep of real stone.

Classic patterns.

Hex, subway, herringbone, and checkerboard for bathrooms and entryways that want some personality.

— How we do it

How we install tile floors

1

Tear-out.

Old flooring comes out and gets hauled off. We check what’s underneath while it’s exposed.

2

Subfloor prep.

This is where tile jobs live or die. We check for deflection (flex) and add plywood or cement board where the floor isn’t stiff enough. We level the surface so large-format tile lays flat. On concrete, we fix cracks and test for moisture.

3

Underlayment.

Cement backer board or an uncoupling membrane, depending on the situation, so the tile is isolated from movement in the subfloor. In bathrooms and laundry rooms, we waterproof.

4

Layout.

We dry-lay and snap lines so the pattern is centered, the cuts at the walls are balanced, and the grout lines run straight. This step is what makes a tile floor look professional instead of DIY.

5

Setting.

The right thinset for the tile, spread with the right trowel, with full coverage under each tile. Large tiles get back-buttered. We use leveling clips on big formats so there’s no lippage.

6

Grout and seal.

Grout lines packed, tooled, and cleaned. We use stain-resistant grout in kitchens and baths and seal where needed.

7

Trim.

Transitions, thresholds, and baseboards.

Inspected three times

Every tile floor gets walked before the job, while it’s going in, and after it’s done. The crew leader and project manager both check for lippage, hollow tiles, grout gaps, and cracked pieces before signing off. Then you walk it with us. Crews that skip their own inspection are the reason tile gets a reputation for cracking. It’s not the tile. It’s the install.

Tile floors and the rest of the room

A new tile floor in a bathroom usually goes with a new vanity, a tile shower, or new fixtures. In the kitchen it goes with a backsplash or new cabinets. We do all of it in-house, so we can sequence the work in the right order and you deal with one crew. See Tile & Shower Walls → See Bathroom Remodels → See Kitchen Remodels →

Straight estimates

Tile labor is more expensive than other floors because it takes longer to do right. We’ll be up front about that. Your written estimate separates tile, prep, materials, and labor, and it flags any subfloor risk we can see. If we find something once the old floor is up, you hear about it before we proceed, not on the final bill.

Financing available

Tile is a long-term investment. We offer financing so you don’t have to wait on it. Ask when you call.
